The Play Writing Project
In the Play Writing Project, we had to write plays (pretty self explanatory). First, we had to complete a packet in which we had to do mini brainstorming activities to get our writing juices flowing, and then we had to write a short, 3 scene long play with 2-3 characters. Mine was called It Started with the end and was about a family of six who get separated during a post apocalyptic earthquake. The characters include the father and two daughters who take refuge in an abandoned basement, trying to think of a way to reunite themselves with their other family members without harming themselves. After all of that good stuff was done, we had to write another 1 act play including 2-3 characters. Writing the play was a fairly short process, but it took a lot of mental power. My play is untitled, is 6 scenes long and is quite sad. My play is about a young girl who finds out she has the same disease that killed her mother and, with her best friend, lives the rest of her days to the fullest. I made some minor changes to my play between first writing it and declaring it complete, but not many. After writing my own play, I read a bunch of the plays written by my classmates. We took a vote on which of the plays should be produced and were then grouped into our plays. I directed The Haunted by Jasmin Diaz starring Scot Wade, Ethan Schnepp, and Loren Cloes (see photo). This play is about three friends who wander into an abandoned (and haunted) hospital and one of the characters wanders off and comes back somewhat possessed. Once I was assigned this play and read the script, I had to cast the tow boys for the two boy roles. It wasn't formal, I just had them both read a few lines of each character and casted them. Once all of that was done, I started blocking the show. It took about one full week to get the whole thing blocked and about three times that long for the actors to memorize their lines and their blocking. Overall, it turned out really cool, eerie and captured the writing really well.
