Growth and Development
I have grown as a mathematician this year in a very significant way. Junior year is filled with work and excitement and it’s the first year of high school where your teachers aren’t checking up on you every five minutes. It was new and uncomfortable at first, but you quickly learn to help yourself, and that is how I have grown in math. I realized that just turning in assignments and meeting requirements to get a passing grade isn’t what’s important, if I want to feel confident in math, I have to help myself understand the material. That’s why I joined honors second semester. I knew the SAT was coming up and I felt pretty insecure about my math skills, in several areas. I figured honors math would be the perfect way to prepare me for the SAT because all of the work we did came straight from the SAT Math 2 subject test book. One area I need to focus on more in the future is helping others. In math, I really only pay attention to my own work and I ask others for help all the time, but I never make the effort to help anyone else. Not only would I be helping someone out, but I believe there is a lot of benefit in collaborating on math work because you hear a thought process you may not have thought of before.
