Spanish Civil War
The Spanish Civil War was one against the newly established republican government and the conservatives. In 1931 the Spanish monarchy fell and a new democratic government was elected and was referred to as "The Second Republic". This new government was majorly middle class and attacked traditional spanish society with reforms. These reforms included the redistribution of large estate lands, the separation of church and state and an anti war, anti militarist policy dedicated to undermining the power of the aristocracy, the catholic church, and the armed forces. Major figures of authority, (aristocrats, the catholic church, fascists, military figures and the monarchs)fought against the reform demanding that they remain valuable and important in spanish society. After the 1936 election, everybody was fighting everybody because no one was happy accept for the Popular Front. When in their greatest time of need, the spanish republic sought support from the Soviet union, which was helpful, but did not result in their victory. In 1937, the nationalists conquered the last republican center in the north. Republican efforts for a negotiated peace failed in early 1939 and on April 1 1939, the republicans unconditionally surrendered.
Lorca
Frederico Garcia Lorca was truly a man of many talents, mainly focusing on the humanitarian arts. Born to a powerful landowner in 1898, he was strongly
influenced by war and current events. In his earlier years, he studied to be a
poet and songwriting was one of his hobbies, but it wasn't until later in life
that he really pursued playwriting. In fact, before he became well known as a
writer, he was quite talented in music, mainly known for his skills of writing
music and playing piano. As a young child, Lorca even had difficulty in school
with writing, drawing and penmanship. It wasn't until his piano instructor died
in 1916 that Lorca truly became interested in writing. He published his first
book of poems in 1921 and shortly after, also began painting. Once he had become a well known artist, he fled to his parents' home afraid of being arrested for his "right winged" beliefs. Once he was found, his brother was shot and killed
Lorca was arrested, shortly thereafter, he was shot and killed by nationalist militia.
