Foodtopia
For the art portion of the Foodtopia project, we made tiles for the High Tech Elementary North County garden. First, we interviewed the elementary schoolers and asked them what they would like to see in their garden. The majority of the kids chose green as the theme color. So, we made tiles out of repurposed wood which we painted green and added a fun nutritional fact. Some of the facts were things like "One in three kids have food allergies". The fun nutritional fact was based off of each group's inquiry question for chemistry. My group's inquiry question was "Why is homegrown food better than store bought food?" and one of the facts we found while doing research is the one depicted above: Tomatoes lose 31% of their nutritional value when prematurely harvested (very common in store bought foods). We came up with this design pretty easily. We knew what fact we were using so we obviously knew we were going to use a tomato. We went into photoshop and made a circle with a sad face and added the leaves on top. The text originally said "tomatoes lose 31% of their nutritional value when prematurely harvested", but after critique and revision we came up with the design above. The tomato was initially supposed to be red and green with black text, but we found out we could only use two colors so we just decided to make it white with white lettering and a green background.
