Product Testing Report

INTRODUCTION by Lizzy -
For this experiment, our group was studying different foundations, the quality of the foundations and the active ingredients within the foundations. Foundation is a cosmetic used on the face to even out skin tones, cover blemishes, and to overall improve the appearance of the face by smoothing and evening out the skin. This is important to investigate because there are a lot of faults in existing foundations that we have tried, and it is time to come up with a better, healthier alternative. Hazardous ingredients in foundations often include propylene glycol, methylparaben, and propylparaben, all of which are considered endocrine disruptors. Not only are many foundations filed with harmful ingredients, but they are also not what many people would consider "good quality". Our group tested the quality of three different liquid foundations based on smoothness, bendability, viscosity, coverage and buildability using methods such as applying samples of the foundations over the skin on the back of the hand, "pouring them over golf balls, and dripping them down petri dishes.
MATERIALS & METHODS by Daniela-
We had three different foundations; Revlon Colorstay, Hard Candy Color Correction Crème, and Stila One Step. We tested all of these in 5 different ways. While testing them we checked if all foundations and the qualities we wanted and which ones had them better. The five qualities we tested for were smoothness, blendability, viscosity, coverage, and buildability. We made charts for each one of these qualities... Each chart was very specific and it helped us conduct our tests. For smoothness, we tested it to see the creaminess, the texture, and the thickness of the foundation. We tested it by simply applying to one hand and comparing it to other hand. For blendability, we tested if the foundation mixes well with natural skin color and the time it takes for foundation to completely blend with skin. We tested this also by applying it to one hand and comparing it with the other hand. For viscosity, we tested it by putting all three foundations on three petri dishes and then seeing how far it runs from one end of the dish to the other. We also tested the speed it takes for the foundation get from one of the dish to the other. For coverage, we tested it by using a golf ball. We simply tested how long it takes ball to be fully covered, how the golf ball looks after being covered, and if all the dimples in the golf ball are covered. For buildability, we tested it by applying it to one hand and seeing if it is easy to work with ( meaning it is clean) and if it take long to apply. With these tests, we hoped to see what were the best and least qualities of each foundation.
RESULTS by Alizea-
We found out that Lizzy's, Hard Candy Color Correction, was the best option as a foundation. It had the best overall coverage of the three and we decided that that was more important to us than the toxic levels in all three. If you are more worried about the safeness of a product however, Daniela's was the least toxic.
DISSCUSSION by Daniela-
After testing all three foundations in different ways we found out that Hard Candy Color Correction was the best and most effective foundation we tested. The texture is just right because it is not too liquidy nor to thick. The coverage was great because it did not take more than two tries to fully over the golf ball and make it look smooth. The blendability was good because it made the skin look smooth and natural. The buildability as also great because it was not messy at all and was very easy to work with. Lastly, the viscosity was great because it was not the fastest nor the slowest it was in the middle which means it was not completely liquid nor really thick.
