Ninth Grade Career Day
Pre Career Day:
On my personality/ career survey, the top careers I was given were teaching and education, science and technology, and art. I think these careers are somewhat accurate for possible future careers for me. I haven't ever really thought about being a teacher before, but it's not something I am against becoming. It definitely isn't my first choice as far as career options but I am not opposed to the idea at all. I am really into science, but not so much technology. I have always been interested in many different sciences and I find myself enjoying science quite a bit. I always kind of wanted to go into some field in science, like astrophysics, but I'm not totally sure what I would do. I think the art option is way off, I don't personally enjoy art, I don't think I am artistic in any way, and I am not the type of person to really "appreciate" art. What I really want to do is work with animals. I don't really care what I'm doing as long as I'm not cutting them open and operating on them. My dream job would be training animals at a place like Sea World, the Zoo, etc. I would also be interested in doing private animal training, such as dogs, horses, and other domestic pets. Going into career day I am hoping that it will be a really fun experience, but I have heard that it's not always what you think it will be. I am really hoping that I will get a good feel for what working with animals is really like, not just what you see on tv. I know that animals are not always cute and adorable, and that there are definitely some not so glamorous parts of caring for animals. I am afraid that I will hate working with animals and be totally turned off to working with them after this experience.
Career Day:
Career day was such an amazing experience. My shadow works mainly with large birds, so I got to see a bunch of different exotic birds and I was fascinated by them. My favorites to see were the owls (picture at top of page). I thought they were just so cool and I had never seen one up close before. They made really cool noises and they were really soft and cute. I think the whole experience was amazing but the owls were just breathtaking. Unfortunately, my shadow was not on duty that day, so I didn't have to do any maintenance or anything like that, but I did get to see the birds and how they were handled. Going into this experience, I wasn't sure what to expect and if I would still be interested in working with animals when I was done, but I think if anything, this experience made me even more interested in working with animals. A great thing about the Safari Park is that you get to see the animal trainers working with their animals so I was not only able to see how the birds were handled, but the other animals too. I have to admit that I was a little disappointed that I wasn't going to be working with lions or something, but after seeing the birds and getting to see the way they interact with their trainers was a game changer. Before going into this experience, I thought I either wanted to work with sea animals, or mammals, but I now have a more open mind about what animals I would want to work with. Overall, it was an amazing opportunity that I hope to experience more in the future.
